As the many campers, staff members and parents who make up the Zodiac Family can tell you, the reasons to go to Zodiac Day Camp are numerous and varied. We turned to some of our amazing team to get feedback on why they think Zodiac rocks, and we’d love to hear from you too. Here’s just a few (of a never-ending list) of reasons why joining the Zodiac community is a great decision:
Kids unleash their creativity
Whether through our Kid-Vantage Program, Specialty Program or even Tween Program, our campers are flexing their creative muscles in everything they do. “Campers are encouraged to be themselves and to go to their counsellors with ideas. It’s important to us to foster their creativity, because being creative is such a huge part of having fun!” said Ellen, Co-Director/Owner of Zodiac. Tara Posluns, our Fashion Academy expert, agrees. In her experience leading the fashion arts program, “I teach campers the importance of expressing themselves in everything that they create. They love the fact that there are no rules in art!”
Kids are constantly learning
“Even though camp isn’t a formal education, kids are sponges,” says Ellen. “When you introduce new ideas at these ages, children become engaged. You wouldn’t believe how many young adults have come back to me to say: ‘Remember when I was in this program? It taught me such valuable skills that I’ve used in school, in life… I’m really better because of it.’” Whether it’s technical skills that campers are learning in Computers or Mad Science programs, or leadership, organizational and cooperative skills, which can be learned in each and every activity, we know that our campers are taking away valuable resources for life.
Kids are safe and nurtured
The safety of our campers is by far the most important aspect of Zodiac. Any parent whose child has spent even a short time with Zodiac knows that we take safety very seriously. Our staff-to-camper ratio make parents feel comfortable that their child is being carefully supervised and treated as an individual. “Nurturing…belonging,” lists Tara. “That was so important to me when I was looking for a day camp. I see it myself in my role at Zodiac – the kids are always well looked after, encouraged and supported. There’s nothing more important than that!”
Kids are inspired every day
While we’re busy making sure your little ones are taken care of, we are also showing them the time of their lives. “Pictures are worth a thousand words to me. Our program Little Ninjas in Training™ is to teach self-defense, body awareness but most of all to have FUN!” says head of program Jimmy Kim. He’s right. And here’s the proof:
Kids push their boundaries
Whether it’s in swimming, learning a new skill or enjoying a new experience in one of our specialty programs, we are always introducing campers to new opportunities and ideas. It’s incredible to see them push themselves. We always make sure that they’re staying within their limits, but we can tell when they’ve reached new personal goals. “I love seeing the kids who are doing Rock Climbing activities and checking in on them to see how far they’ve come,” says Ellen. “They’re always a bit nervous at first, but once they realize that they are safe and relying on their own strength, they boot it up that wall. It’s incredible to watch them learn to push themselves and eventually to trust themselves.”
Kids become part of the family
“As a mom, I chose Zodiac because of how warm, intimate and nurturing it felt,” says Tara. And she’s right! Even campers that have only been with us for a short time get the “family-feeling” that is extended to everyone. There are no cliques or exclusivity here – instead, there are real connections and feelings of belonging. “Ellen will always say we are one big family!” exclaims Jimmy.
Kids get a boost in self-confidence
“Being part of the Zodiac performing arts program gives kids the sense of what it feels like to be part of something truly special,” Angela Williams, Co-owner of Zodiactors Musical Theatre Company, shares. “The kids work together to produce an amazing show and in the end feel incredibly proud of their accomplishments. It boosts their self-esteem and confidence each day as they learn new dances and songs and see themselves and each other improving. The final show in front of their peers and families is always incredible to watch as their smiles and energy light up the stage!”
Kids love the counsellors
“It is very obvious from the first day of camp how much the kids love, rely on and look up to their counsellors, staff and specialists. The staff truly are a team of professionals who take pride and feel a sense of accomplishment in putting smiles on kids’ faces,” says Jimmy. Angela feels similarly, and understands the importance of the role of counsellors and other staff: “Coming to camp for me is being part of a special group of leaders that give the gift of endless summer memories to children.”
Kids have memories that will last a lifetime
“Camp friends are your friends for life,” says Tara. And while it sounds like a cliché, many parents who were campers in their youth know that it’s true. Those carefree summer days are some of the most special in one’s life, and we are so glad that we get to play a role in the memories of the campers we’ve had for the past 19 years. Angela sums it up perfectly: “Camp is about helping children find their passion and watching them grow and meet new challenges, solve problems and make friendships that will last a lifetime.”
